Sri Y N College was established in the year 1949 as “The Narsapur College” owing to the forethought of a visionary philanthropist and advocate Sri Yerramilli Narayana Murthy garu who nucleated the luminaries of the time under the Chairmanship of Sri Gade Manikyam Gupta garu, another famous advocate, for starting the College. The College attained the full-fledged status of a Degree College in the year 1956 and moved to the present premises that have the iconic and historic Dutch building on the banks of the river Vasista Godavari due to untiring efforts of Sri Yerramilli Narayana Murthy garu and the timely support of Sri Grandhi Venkata Reddy Naidu garu, the then Law Minister.
The “Narsapur College” was renamed after its founder Secretary and Correspondent in the year 1967 as “Sri Yerramilli Narayana Murthy College” and recorded impressive growth gradually under the leadership of successive Secretary and Correspondents namely Sri Javvadi Lakshmaiah Naidu, Dr Kosuri Adinarayana, Sri Chakravadhanula Reddappa Dhaveji, Sri Chakravadhanula Lakshmi Narasimham Dhaveji, Dr M S Sastry.
The current Secretary and Correspondent of the College is Dr Chinamilli Satyanarayana Rao, who nurtured the College to the present level of being one of the top 10 Colleges in the State, during the past four decades. The College was elevated to PG level in the year 1989-90 and subsequently attained Autonomous Status.
Under the leadership of Dr. C Satyanarayana Rao, Sri Y N College achieved accreditation from NAAC thrice with an ‘A’ Grade in 2004, 2010, and 2017, and attained an ‘A+’ Grade in its fourth cycle in 2023. This remarkable accomplishment establishes the college as the first Private Aided College to receive accreditation successively for four cycles. The College also has a rare distinction of having a “Research Centre” in Management Studies with 3 University recognised Research Guides and 10 Scholars allotted by Adikavi Nannaya University. The College is recognised by UGC as “College with Potential for Excellence”.
The College has an impressive Human Resources Development Centre for Career Guidance, Placement and Skill Development. UGC has sponsored the establishment of Gandhian Studies Centre in the College and it is the first of its kind in the State when sanctioned. Sri Y N College has a Community Services Centre which has adopted adjoining slums to regularly carry out its activities besides participating in all relief activities during natural calamities, fire accidents and emergencies. The College, also has, an Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Cell which provides a platform for new start-ups.
Sri Y N College supports experiential learning, participative learning and problem solving methodologies together with innovative pedagogical methods of teaching to enhance the learning experience of students.
The College is located in a semi-urban area and caters to a lot of surrounding rural areas. The students come from a widely varied backgrounds and the College blends them, mends them and nurtures them into vibrant youth sensitive, energetic and ready to serve the society. Besides offering the best teaching in the specified curriculum and suitably chosen add on and certificate courses, the College has established facilities for special coaching in spoken English, training in yoga and meditation, training in communication skills, soft skills and employability skills, special drives for career guidance and personality development, coaching for competitive exams and Job Melas as well as Campus Placements through the HRD Centre.
The College also has two good libraries, an exclusive Yoga and Meditation Centre, a unique Gandhian Studies Centre, an active Community Service Centre, two Units of National Service Scheme, National Cadet Corps Units of Army and Navy and a well equipped gymnasium providing a multi dimensional scope of personality growth through joining any one or a few of the wings stated. Students play a vital role in the College administration through Students Council and they get opportunity to display their leadership skills during the annual events such as Sports Day, Independence Day, Republic Day, Graduation Day and Annual Day celebrations. A dynamic feedback mechanism from the students will have an impact in the decisions of Board of Studies. Students’ participation is the lifeline for Cultural Committee, Magazine Committee and Anti-ragging drive and various Departmental clubs. They are encouraged to actively participate in the Departmental Seminars, National Seminars and Workshops. They are also exposed to eminent personalities in various fields, subject experts, spiritual gurus and motivational speakers during the periodically organised guest lectures and colloquia.
The College has a very effective student mentoring mechanism that ensures a personalized care and ushers in an affectionate bondage between the teachers and students. This in fact is the reason for a strong Alumni engagement too. The overall environment and culture of the College is set to enrich human values and holistic development of the personality. Patriotism is infused by setting the National Song “Vande Mataram” as prayer song of the College. The entire campus comes to a standstill as a mark of respect when it is played daily sharp at 9 AM. The students are thus provided with adequate facilities and opportunities to receive the necessary skills along with values to enter the Society with energy and knowledge to meet the challenges of the present day’s competitive world.
